Factors to Consider

Climate: Select trees that thrive in Brea’s hot, dry summers and cool winters. Native plants typically make good choices because they are already suited to the area’s climate.

Planting Instructions

Dig Deep Enough: The planting hole needs to be at least two times wider than the root system of the plant. The depth of the hole should not be any deeper than the roots of the plant. The highest part of the roots should be even with the surface of the ground or slightly higher.

Fill Holes With Dirt and Add Mulch: Fill the holes with the same dirt used when digging the holes. Put down a 2-3-inch layer of mulch all around the base of the tree, keeping it at least 6 inches away from the trunk.

Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting, then give the plant regular waterings until the plant is well-established.

Care After Planting

Water: Once the plant is established, follow a regular watering schedule. Most young plants need extra moisture for at least the first year.

Pruning: Prune the plant to keep the shape you want. Remove dead or dying branches.

Fertilize: Fertilize the plant once per year with a well-balanced fertilizer to promote continued healthy growth.
